Quintin Quam Sr. | Zuni Pueblo | Monumental Pictorial Mosaic Inlay
His name is Archibald.
Not Archie.
I cannot emphasize this enough.
You may call him Archibald.
Because look at this fucking owl.
This is not an owl who recently arrived.
This is an owl who was already here.
Archibald is a Snowy Owl, sitting magnificently on his branch with those enormous yellow eyes, looking directly at us like we’ve interrupted a meeting we were not invited to.
And unlike Penelope, who has apparently turned her garden into an amusement park, or Arthur, who has achieved enlightenment through possession of one excellent branch, Archibald appears to be responsible for something.
I don’t know what.
But it’s important.
This monumental pictorial ring is the work of Zuni artist Quintin Quam Sr., and once again Quam has essentially ignored the normal physical boundaries of what we traditionally call a ring.
The face is approximately three inches long.
Forty grams.
And right in the middle of this enormous silver field sits one spectacular Snowy Owl, assembled from individual pieces of shell and stone and surrounded by a riot of turquoise, lapis and multicolor geometric mosaic.
It’s a portrait.
It’s a mosaic.
It’s a miniature painting.
And for reasons I deeply respect, it is also a size 9.5 ring.
WHY THIS PIECE MATTERS
Look at Archibald’s face.
That is where this piece begins.
Quam has given the owl those extraordinary yellow eyes surrounded by black markings against a predominantly white face.
Then the detail continues downward.
The breast.
The barred markings.
The individual wing.
The talons.
The branch.
Rather than simply creating the silhouette of an owl and filling it with material, Quam has built character into the bird.
And that matters tremendously in pictorial inlay.
Archibald doesn’t just read as “owl.”
He reads as this particular owl.
Then Quam creates an extraordinary visual tension around him.
The owl itself is almost entirely monochromatic — white, black and soft neutral tones punctuated by those yellow eyes.
But surrounding him is color.
Turquoise.
Deep blue.
Orange.
Purple.
Warm shell tones.
Geometric forms explode above, below and along the perimeter while the central polished silver field gives Archibald room to exist independently from them.
So despite an enormous amount of visual information, your eye goes immediately to one place:
Those fucking eyes.

CURATOR’S FIELD OBSERVATION
Archibald may actually be one of the strongest compositions in this group.
The reason is contrast.
Quam has placed a predominantly white Snowy Owl against a huge reflective sterling field, then surrounded that quiet central image with intensely colorful geometric mosaic.
The result is almost architectural.
The geometry creates the structure.
The polished silver creates atmosphere.
And Archibald sits in the middle of all of it like a tiny living portrait.
There is also tremendous detail within the owl itself.
Those dark markings aren’t simply decoration.
They give texture to the feathers and break up the white body while allowing the separately constructed wing to remain immediately readable.
Then there are the talons.
Tiny fucking owl toes.
Because apparently Quam was not willing to stop until the bird had feet.
This is exactly the sort of detail that transforms pictorial inlay from representation into storytelling.

ERIC’S NOTES FROM THE FIELD
THE EYES.
That’s the whole fucking thing for me.
Because look at him.
This is a bird who has information.
Penelope wants to show you her garden.
Arthur wants everyone to stop fucking around so he can enjoy his branch.
Archibald?
Archibald knows why the estate was divided that way in the will.
And he’s not telling anyone.
But then you actually start studying the craftsmanship and this thing gets ridiculous.
The markings across his feathers.
The separate wing.
The tiny talons.
The branch.
The geometric architecture surrounding him.
And all that wild color framing a bird who is almost completely black and white.
It makes him feel like a portrait.
Like someone commissioned a formal painting of an extremely important owl.
Except Quintin Quam painted him in stone and shell.
And then attached the entire fucking thing to your finger.
His name is Archibald.
Please address him accordingly.
