Crescent of Clear Skies

There are silhouettes that never lose their power. Long before you notice the turquoise, before you admire the silverwork, your eye finds the crescent. It’s a shape that has traveled through generations of Navajo jewelry, carrying with it ideas of protection, prosperity, and the open sky.

This vintage pendant by Robert Kelly is a beautiful interpretation of that enduring form. A bold sterling crescent is framed by a graceful row of vivid natural turquoise cabochons, each individually set and bordered by twisted wire and traditional Navajo silverwork. Carefully placed silver beads add depth and rhythm, while the wide fluted bail gives the piece a commanding presence on everything from Navajo pearls to leather.

Robert Kelly’s work is admired for its balance—substantial without feeling heavy, traditional while remaining unmistakably elegant. The sweeping crescent feels architectural, while the bright turquoise provides the unmistakable heartbeat of the Southwest. It’s the kind of pendant that looks equally at home paired with a strand of vintage pearls or standing proudly on its own.

This isn’t a trend piece. It’s a classic. One that will look just as right fifty years from now as it does today.

Eric’s Notes from the Field

Robert Kelly always seems to understand proportion. The turquoise isn’t oversized because it doesn’t need to be—the silver does just as much of the talking. I especially love this one because it’s incredibly versatile. Throw it on a strand of 8mm Navajo pearls and it’s elegant. Put it on chunky oxidized pearls and suddenly it’s got attitude. Those are the pieces I chase.
